Savona is called the city of the Popes because Sixtus IV and Julius II Della Rovere were born here. Worth
seeing is the historic centre with its fine palazzi, among which Julius II ‘s is definitely oustanding. Interesting are the Cathedral with the XVI-century intarsia choir and the Sistine Chapel, the mausoleum of the Della Rovere family. Our Lady of the Castle’s oratory with the huge polyptych by V. Foppa and L. Brea and the sixteenth century fortress with a view over the harbour are certainly worth of a visit.
