Levanto

Levanto is a seaside town north of the Gulf of La Spezia, near the Cinque Terre and like many other Ligurian towns has a multiple identity. It is not only a seaside resort, but also a fishing village and a hill top farming town. This mixture of elements has influenced Levanto’s art, economy, architecture and traditional cuisine. Levanto’s old centre is divided into two parts, the 13th century “Borgo Antico” and the 16th century “Borgo Nuovo”. Two important religious structures are located in the old centre, the Church of Sant’Andrea and the Convent of the Agostiniani.

Levanto’s climate is pleasant all year round. The hearty can go swimming and surfing until the end of autumn. Hiking along the hills and through the surrounding hilltop villages is another local attraction.
Levanto is member of the “Slow Cities” club, an award given by the “Slow Food” association for excellent local wines, traditional cuisine and the general quality of life.

In spring and summer, ferries depart daily from Levanto, for La Spezia, the gulf towns, the Cinque Terre, the Riviera and Portofino, sea and weather conditions permitting (info:www.navigazionegolfodeipoeti.it).
